Count down to the WHW

HWMBO and I are now up in rainy Scotland  preparing for the WHW race which starts on Saturday 23rd at 1am.

The trip up was great spending a night with The Old bag who as always was on very good form.  Thursday morning I work up feeling very nervous and totally out of control of the race.  I hadn’t sorted out my food or worked where my drop bags are going or what is to go in them; I did in just sit on the stairs and burst  into tears.

Having finally pulled myself together and told myself to man up I headed down to Sainsburys to sort the food. I wondered up and down the aisle trying to decide what I would want to eat finally deciding on hot cross buns which will be filled with honey, some baby bells, bananas and a few other bits and pieces.  As you can see I am a very healthy eater!

Returning home I sorted my drop bags and re-read the race  instructions.  One of the rules of the WHW is that runners must have one person who is capable of running with them if necessary.  Katherine is unfortunately recovering from a bad injury so unable to run.  I sent a message to Fiona to see if she could help.  She  was fantastic and found Pete Humphreys who has done the race a few times and he agree to run with me should I need it.  A huge big thank you to both Fiona and Pete for coming to my rescue, quite fantastic.

Later on Thursday HWMBO and myself headed up to Milgavie where we were staying with friends who live a short distance from the start.  A great evening catching up and chatting.

Today is D day, final preparations, pick up Katherine, registering, going back to our friends for food then nervously wait for the start at 1am!  It’s quite a weekend of racing, WS100, UTSW, Ultra race 100 and of course the most famous race in Scotland the WHW!

HWMBO and Katherine will be tweeting on my slow progress through the highlands and results will be posted on the West Highland Way website http://www.westhighlandwayrace.org/index.htm

Good luck to all the runners and their crews, hopefully see you all at the finish.

Happy training!
