Little steps …..

IMG_0555Last Monday was the day I was allowed to begin running again, if and that was a big IF I felt that everything was OK with my leg.  Having waiting almost a month since the Spine to be able to run I put my sensible pink hat on and decided that my leg required a further week to rest.  SO it was with great excitement and a touch of nerves that yesterday my trainers were laced up and I headed out for a little run.

I didn’t bother with my garmin as there was absolutely no point.  This wasn’t about speed or distance this was about testing my leg to see if it was healed.  The first few minutes I walked to make sure I was warmed up properly then with great trepidation I started to jog.  At first everything felt wrong, both legs hurt, my ankles twinged and my hamstrings felt weird.  Feeling a tad disappointed I kept going thinking that perhaps I hadn’t warmed up properly.

Thankfully the aches and pains did get better but I had wanted so much to go running and for everything to feel normal.  With the short circuit completed I arrived back home feeling very disappointed and rather negative, especially as I had done the right thing and rested – even at the gym I could only do the cross-trainer with no resistance!

Once I stopped the old body seemed to be OK, but I decided to take all necessary precautions and massaged Emu Oil onto my knee then iced it as I worked on the computer.  Roll on to this morning and as I leapt out of my nice warm bed to go and make coffee I was delighted that nothing hurt – this was looking good.

Trainers were once more laced up but this time I decided to do a short run in the forest and I must say it felt so much better.  No aches and pains, ankles were good and even my hamstrings didn’t complain – things were looking up and even though it was pouring with rain I was happy; it was big smiles all round as I returned to my car.

I will continue to do short runs this week just to make sure everything is as it should be before seeing my osteopath again on Monday – keep your fingers toes and anything else you can think of firmly crossed for a successful outcome.  Then perhaps I can start training for the Two Oceans on the 19th April!
