No running but be inspired “Like the Wind”

IMG_1190I have been very quiet on the blogging front recently as I wasn’t really in the right frame of mind to put fingers to keyboard and type about my non-existing running.

Since the Spine Race I have been recovering from an ever extension injury to my right leg.  Basically I got my foot caught between two slabs on the first day of the race forcing my knee to bend in the wrong direction (my thigh seemed to want to join forces with my toes) so you can imagine a bit of a painful experience.

After two painful sessions with my osteopath he allowed me to try and keep my sanity in tact by letting me train on the cross trainer but only on level 1 or 2, together with some aqua-walking, yes you read it right, WALKING up and down the pool which did seem to get a lot of attention from the swimming ladies asking if I was OK! Could they not see I was training!!

Today (Monday 10th) is the earliest day, providing all was OK that I could run.  You have no idea how tempting it was to put my trainers on and head out into the pouring rain for a little 5k, but thankfully I have my sensible hat on and have made the decision that I won’t even attempt to run until the earliest Friday. My knee is feeling much better and after nearly 4 weeks of rehab I think it would be a mistake to go back when I know in my heart that my leg isn’t fully recovered; More cross-training and aqua-walking it is then!

Last week I went to the launch of a new magazine called “Like the Wind” the brain child of Simon and Julie Freeman.  This wasn’t to be your usual running magazine telling you how to run a faster marathon or what new superfood to eat, this was a collection of stories about running, personal anecdotes, poems, pictures and inspirational stories from everyday runners and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

IMG_0807I had been asked to contribute which was wonderful and a real honour.  I chose to write about my Arctic race as for me it summed up why I run and I hope others enjoyed my story.  On the night they had a set of 6 postcards with pictures from various stories within the magazine and one of the pictures was of me on the Ice Road in temperatures of about -35! I love the quote.

Screen Shot 2014-01-30 at 12.05.10Three of us were asked to tell a 5 minute story.  First up was SimonWheatcroft a blind Ultra runner who blew me away with his story.  Due to an eye disease he had gone blind at 18.  Having got bored of exercises inside he starting running on football pitches, progressed to closed roads then thought if he could run alongside a dual carriage way!   Next up was James Adams who read a few pages of his hopefully soon to be published book, then finally me.

BfvIlraIEAE0LguA great evening, catching up with friends who I hadn’t seen for a long time together with meeting some lovely new people who I either follow on Twitter/FB or vice-versa, great to be able to put a name to a face.

If you haven’t got a copy of the magazine go and get yourself one, definitely worth a read and there’s some great art work inside with no adverts!

Happy Training.
