Well what can I say, a much better end to the week which is always marvellous!
First training session of the week was a disaster. My car was being serviced so I drove to the garage and did my run from there. As there was still a lot of snow on the lanes I put my yaktraks on and off I went. After a good 10 minute warm up I picked up the pace a bit but very quickly had to stop and walk for a couple of minutes to get my breathing right, very frustrating, however once sorted I continued on my way. this was the theme of my run for the next 2.15hrs and I used my inhaler5 times – very stupid. If I was a client I would have told myself to stop. So I returned home feeling very despondent wondering how on earth I was going to run 290 miles in May
Not to be deterred I popped the yaktraks on the following day and went for another longish run – although my chest was still tight, the weather had warmed slightly which makes a huge difference to my chest and I only had to use my inhaler twice and much less walking breaks – feeling more positive. The speed sessions on the treadmill were better too. Todays speed session was again done on the treadmill and it nearly killed me, not thankfully with the breathing but sheer effort but boy do you feel marvellous afterwards!
I have a talk to give in London next week which is a bit daunting as there will be no pictures, just me standing and telling them about my running – at least I can’t go wrong – well I hope I can’t!
This week I have received some lovely emails through my website, I’m always blown away with what people say and I love hearing their inspirational stories, thank you.
Being “what I call an old bag ” I have reached that time of life when the body starts going through changes, all part of the process of growing up and never something that has bothered me, in fact I have always said bring it on as it will make life so much easier. Having said that the one and only symptom I appear to be having are hot flushes – good grief they are HORRID! One minute all is well with the world and the next I’m stripping off my kit, opening the windows and turning the heating off – my whole body turns into an inferno THEN it stops, clothes go back on, heating turned up to max, windows shut as I feel freezing. Imagine what its like when I’m out running and I have one!
I was watching the news while drinking coffee in bed this morning (it was 6.15!) and they did a piece on older people taking part in sport. It was great to see one lady who took up running when she was 50 and has also thrown the javelin and is now a sprinter and a group of 60 plus men who cycled plus over 50s swimmers, one of which was a World Champion, great to see and hopefully an inspiration to the younger generation, age as they said is just a number! Have a marvellous weekend, enjoy racing or training and I look forward to catching up next week!
Happy Training
