Trapped nerve & all things running

My face is one huge smile today as I went out for my first run in a week feeling a wee bit nervous about my left leg and all seemed to be fantastic – PHEW now I feel that its all systems go for the Double GUCR in 8 days time.  Having seen my osteopath on Friday I was told that there was a trapped nerve between my 4/5th vertebrae which was causing the problem in my left leg (Ken used long words that I didn’t understand and can’t remember so that was the simplified version)  With a few bends of the body, legs in weird positions and a click of the back all was well with the world – simples!

What a marvellous weekend I had, although I was feeling just a touch grumpy due to the lack of running. It always makes me feel fat and lumpy and all I can see is fat almost growing on my body – I know its in my head but it’s always the same.

Wayward Daughter No 1 and family came over on Friday night which was wonderful, lots of laughter, singing (yes even HWMBO sang which is never a good on the ears!) and of course a few glasses of wine were consumed  – I call it wine tasting!

On Sunday I woke early, had a bath then slapped on the make-up before leaving the house to drive to Surrey for the day as I was taking part in a conference on running and blogging organised by Laura Fountain and Liz Goodchild of Write That Run.  There were three speakers who spoke about the media/PR side of blogging, 3 inspirational speakers (one of which was me), 3 running experts and 3 speakers who talked about blogging and Vlogging (video blogging).

I especially loved listening to Donna DeWick who in 2004 she received a diagnosis of Charcot Marie Tooth disease, a progressive degenerative nerve disease, and in 2007 she was also diagnosed with Hypermobility Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a collagen disorder. what an amazing lady, she won’t take no for an answer and is so determined and driven, quite fantastic.  Having been told she couldn’t and shouldn’t run she has gone on to compete in many triathlons including the USA Paratriathlon National Championships.  Kevin Betts had another amazing story.  He raises awareness for mental health issues and amongst other things in 2012 ran 52 sub 4 hour marathons, 12 (I could have got that number wrong) were done on a treadmill.  He read out a letter written to him by a teenager he had given a talk to, very moving and bought a lump to my throat.

Karen Weir a personal trainer gave a great talk on running technique, I think she would be horrified if she ever saw me running.  I thought about what she said today as I was out on my run and tried running like an elite marathon runner – not a chance but the thought is there.  Rhalou Allerhand was very funny and said a few “naughty words” which made me giggle like a school girl.

The day finished with a talk from Scott Overall an Olympic Marathon runner, good grief 5 mm easy, I would die! It was marvellous meeting all the other runners and bloggers there, although I did feel like a bit of an old bag compared to the majority of people in the room, but there is nothing better than spending an afternoon talking and listening to everything running.

Now its time to finish my planning, organise my kit and start buying food for the Double; I’m hoping for the sun to come out!

  • It was absolutely incredible to meet you and hear your story Mimi! I must admit, your tales had me dreaming of what could be possible, do-able, to dream big and never stop taking that “no” as the only answer! We shall see! Good luck with the DGUC preparations.
